I doubt it, but just in case, Basil, who was given just weeks to live 5 or 6 months ago is still with us and apparently going strong, we know he could deteriate suddenly and without warning but he's happy and thats the main thing. Nothing has happened in respect of the resources website and if I cannot find the time to do it or get assistance I may regretably have to abandon the idea.

Regretfully I havn't posted to the site for some time. Unfortunately Basil has a medical condition and had to spend some time in veterinary hospital. Basil has end stage liver disease and the prognosis is not good at all - Three weeks ago he was given just weeks to live. Basil however is holding up well, he has no pain or discomfort, still has an excellent appetite and still wants and gets regular walks. The Vets have advised us of the signs we should be looking for in order that we do what is right for Baz. Positively Basil is at this time showing no such signs but we have been warned that this can change dramatically in a matter of hours. We carry on as normal trying not to convey our sadness to Basil who is blissfully ignorant of his condition. If you run into us on our various walks around the area please treat Basil as normal and as usual absolutely no treats for our dogs!! I will sort out the blog and the cleverk9 site but I'm sure you will all understand that updates to the blog will be infrequent and cleverk9 is now likely to be postponed until next summer since I have loads of research to conduct over the coming months. notifications of updates can be obtained by feeds at the bottom of the page and I will email news of the eventual launch of cleverk9 to those who have expressed interest by completing the email form.
Thank you for your patience.

How quickly have I reverted to my bad ways of forgetting to update the blog? I have been incredibly busy lately but hopefully I will be able to spend more time blogging and preparing aboutdogs over the summer although I think the launch may now be delayed. Its difficult when one has to write the articles, draw the graphics and write the code. I have not been doing as much training with my own dogs lately, but work with Rusty in respect of epilepsy alert training has gone really well and the little fellow is more or less the finished article. Hopefully I will get some time to do some concentrated work with the boys up at Windy Ridge this summer.

Taz has been alerting to Mathews seizures and movement during the night ever since Barney become ill and continued to do so after we lost Barney. Last week little Rusty gave his first night time alert and was duly rewarded. Not to be out done Basil also got in the act for the first time in all of his eight years! This appears to be a classic example of vicarious learning by a canine. I wonder why it took so long. Perhaps it was my fault in thinking that Basil simply wasn't interested or up to the job. Whatever the reason I am very pleased with the boys. Responding to complex partial seizures requires a little more discrimination than a standard Tonic / clonic episode but my three adapt so easily, it certainly makes life a little easier.

If only I could teach them how to administer the meds!!!

Time for some good news. There has been a new dog in the Tazmaniax household for some time now. His name is Rusty and he is a terrier mix. He's Emma's little baby just 9 months old but he lives with the rest of the Tazmaniax while Emma's at university and to be honest there is no way that I am going to give him back!!! It would be like a rehoming and its not right to inflict that pressure on a dog unnecessarily. When she is settled and able to to provide for a dog , probably some time off, we will find a suitable companion for her.
When he first came to us it seemed a little too soon after losing Barney to be bringing another dog into the house but he needed a home, Sam's family (Emma's boyfriend) rescued him from a situation and Emma was desperate to keep him. So he's here with us and I'm really glad he come into our lives

I must admit interest had disappeared after losing Barney and although time isn't the great healer that everyone would have you believe we try to move on. Now we also have a new static site in development cleverk9 to promote our training and behaviour operations in the Tendring area and the canine resources site Aboutdogs will hopefully be operational and useful by the autumn.

I am afraid aboutdogs has been delayed because I have so much research to do before the summer. Once this is finished I will devote as much time as possible to providing basic canine information plus useful articles, studies and research documents on the resources site.
The links have been added on the left of the page

The last word

I keep returning to the tazmaniax blog with the intention of adding to it but find that I no longer have the same enthusiasm so this is the last entry before a change in the format to a resources page. This change is not scheduled until next year but tazmaniax is unlikely to receive further updates in the present format.

About Barney.
Barney was a wonderful companion who totally changed my life. Anne bought Barney to keep me company while she was away working and I was looking after Mathew and Emma. Barney soon attached to our children and would play endlessly in the garden with me, Emma and Mat. Before long Barney was responding to distress signals given off by Mathew when he was fitting. Not knowing this fact at the time but my praise of Barney when this response was displayed was reinforcing of the behaviour and Barney continued to perform alerting me to all of Mathews fits which most often occurred at night. On one occasion I was sleeping so soundly there is no doubt that Mathew would have died by chocking on his own vomit if it were not for Barney's intervention. You can understand I’m sure why he was so loved and cherished.

When Barney was around seven years old we joined a dog training society in Colchester within a couple of weeks Barney won his first obedience red rosette. Barney was also worked extensively by Emma winning more rosettes with her and of course the gold good citizen’s award.

Wondering what it was that made some dog’s wonderful companions and quick to learn like Barney started me on the road to study. Without Barney I would have never have started on this incredible voyage of discovery. I have received my first awards with distinctions and am working towards a Bsc in animal behaviour. Thank you Barney, you gave me purpose in life.

About the future

Taz doesn’t go to Cedts that often these days but I get him there when I can to give him practise in a different environment. He has started to pick up on Mats distress signals and also alerts increasingly before the fit starts so this is a real result. Without Barneys help I wouldn’t have had a clue how to develop these behaviours.

About dogs
I have a few new projects in the pipe line obviously studies are taking the bulk of my free time at this moment (and for the next few years most likely!) But the launch of a new canine care website is set for next year. At this stage we are considering providing free resources to canine owners, handlers and even trainers in an attempt to drive up understanding of the dogs needs at home and in the training establishment.

In respect of dog training I have long argued that regulation is needed to combat ignorance in some and apathy to new thinking in others. The Animal Behaviour and Training council has recently been formed to monitor performance of trainers and behaviourists. This development has been much needed and long overdue. Fortunately the establishments that oversee my training are represented on this council.

Thank you for your support of the tazmaniax.
